Commonly Asked Questions

Is there a free trial?
Yes. First time subscribers are offered, Delivr FREE, a 90-day free trial for personal, non-profit, educational use and limited commercial trial. The QR codes you generate are dynamic-ready requiring an upgrade to enable link editing. Upgrade anytime to a paid subscription plan during or after the trial period for continued use.
What happens to my QR codes when the trial period expires?
For your QR codes to function the way they should, we recommend upgrading to a paid plan before the trial is over.
Do I have to sign a long term contract?
No. You can subscribe to a monthly subscription plan that runs month-to-month, no long term contracts or commitments. Yearly plans discounted 10% are also available - that's over one month FREE over the year.
How do I know which plan works best for me?
If you are a small business looking to evaluate QR codes, start with the FREE, PLUS or PRIME plan, based on the QR codes you need. If you are a mid to large scale business looking to scale with QR codes, the VIP or PRO plan is ideal. However, if you are a global brand looking for an Enterprise-grade solution with a highly specific set of requirements, we recommend the ENTERPRISE plan. Need to discuss this in detail? Talk to us.
Can I change my plan later on?
Absolutely! You can upgrade or downgrade your plan at any time between paid subscription plans.
Is there a setup fee?

The invoice must be paid in full and the full payment must be deposited into our bank account before your account subscription can be upgraded or extended. We accept payments by check, wire/bank deposit, or credit card. contact support
Can I cancel my account at any time?
Yes. Simply cancel your paid subscription and your credit card will not be charged again. While this is self-service, we would be happy to take care of this for you if you contact support.
What happens when I cancel my subscription?
When your subscription is canceled all of your campaigns and dynamic QR codes will be deactivated. If you decide to renew your subscription you can contact us to have your account and QR codes reactivated.

If you exceed your plan volume for two consecutive months, we will contact you to upgrade to a higher plan for the following month. You can decide to continue with a higher plan, be charged for the additional views at a rate of $0.001 for each additional view, or to cancel your account. Campaign and QR code access, management and tracking continue uninterrupted throughout.

FREE accounts are limited to 1000 total views. Once the total views volume for your free plan is reached, your campaign will be suspended until you upgrade to a paid subscription plan.

Who owns the data that is being managed through my Delivr account?
All data that is being managed through your Delivr account is yours. Delivr does not share that data with any third party with the exception of sending anonymized location data to Google APIs to generate the maps used in your reports. You can export your raw data from your Account Dashboard. You determine how long data remains stored in our system. You can choose to delete your reports & underlying data at anytime.
How is an active campaign determined?
An active campaign is an item that appears on your Account Dashboard. For example, generating a dynamic QR code equals the creation of one campaign. As long as that campaign is in use and on your Account Dashboard, it is considered “active”. You can archive campaigns when they are no longer in use.
Do my campaigns expire?

What is the turnaround time for email support?
We typically reply in less than half an hour to email queries during business hours on business days, with a slower turnaround outside business hours and on weekends.
What are QR codes?
QR codes® (Quick Response Codes) are 2D Barcodes readable by smartphones using a QR code reader app. QR codes placed in ads, direct mail, retail displays or signage can deliver information and media to a consumer's smartphone via their mobile Web browser. QR codes can launch URLs, mobile landing pages, initiate phone calls, App Downloads, and more.
What are dynamic QR codes?
Dynamic QR codes are also known as editable QR codes. This means you can change the destination of the QR code anytime, as often as you wish, even after printing. With our dynamic QR codes, you have this flexibility, because a short URL that points to your destination URL is encoded in the QR code graphic. As such, you can change the stored link without having to generate and print the QR code again. This saves effort, reprinting costs, and enables you to respond to any changes in the campaign as quickly as possible. A further benefit is that if you need to get the code into production but do not know the final destination, you can generate the code using a placeholder URL and edit where it goes later. Made a typo in the URL on code creation, no worries you can easily fix that once caught. Delivr's dynamic QR codes go even further than that with Delivr's intelligent link routing service. Dynamic QR codes are also tied into our analytics platform which gives you access to data like number of views/scans, location, type of OS, language, and more. Learn more about our reports.
What are static QR codes?
Static QR codes cannot be edited after printing and are not eligible for our analytics platform. However, static QR codes will continue to scan even if you no longer pay for a subscription.
What is the difference between a static and dynamic QR code?
Static QR codes can be used to direct users to a fixed destination. This means one cannot change the destination URL once printed and distributed. However, Delivr’s dynamic QR codes are flexible in nature. You can change the URL linked to it, even after printing and distributing.
What are views?
A view is counted every time someone engages your campaign short URL by direct entry, click, scan or tap and redirects to the destination configured for the campaign.
What is a short URL click?
A short URL click is counted every time someone clicks through your short URL and counts against your total allowed views.
What is a QR code scan?
A QR code scan is counted every time someone scans your QR code and counts against your total allowed views.
Do people need an app to scan QR codes?
No. Downloading an App is not required. QR codes can be scanned using the phone camera on Apple devices and Google Lens on Android devices.

QR Code & QR Code Generator FAQs

Most Popular QR Code FAQs

Sizes listed always refer to an exact square shape. Sizes are provided in Metric and Imperial / US Measurements. The Imperial / US sizes (Inch / Inches) equivalents are rounded.

Standard QR codes

For print applications, such as placing standard black and white QR codes on packaging or in magazines, use the following specifications.

Standard QR code size guidelines

  • Minimum size for standard QR codes
    • 10 mm (.4 inch), excluding the margin (Quiet Zone), is the minimum size for scanning standard, ISO 18004-compliant QR codes.
  • Recommended size for standard QR codes
    • 12 mm (.5 inch), excluding the margin (Quiet Zone), to ensure best performance.

Labels and packaging may require deeper bespoke analysis especially when deviating from a standard black and white code. This starts with a review of a PDF of the layout, requires an understanding of the type of printing method and materials, and may then move to a print trial.

Always Test.

Custom QR codes

QR codes do not have to be the standard black and white design. Brands today are incorporating custom colors, logos and more into the QR code design.

Delivr's QR Code Designer enables you to effortlessly merge a dynamic QR code with any part of an image or logo to create a beautiful and clear call-to-action. Delivr's QR Code Designer combines the visual design that people LOVE with the QR Code call-to-action that people KNOW, creating an experience that draws peoples attention and invites them to make the leap from print to mobile.

However, the specifications for these custom QR codes are slightly different than standard QR codes, namely that the minimum size increases.

Custom QR code size guidelines and best practices

  • Minimum size for custom QR codes with light customization
    • 2 cm (.75 inch)‍
  • Recommended size for custom QR codes
    • 3 cm (1.25 inches)‍, larger if possible
  • No inverted codes
    • Do not use a QR code with light dots on a dark background‍
  • Use high contrast
    • Be sure the QR code color contrasts with the background, or it may not be readable.

Advisory

Our internal testing has shown that some custom QR codes that can be read by iOS devices cannot be read by some Android devices. Be sure to test the QR codes you create on both types of devices to ensure that all consumers will be able to successfully access your content.

And here’s the reason. Customized QR codes are not standard, ISO compliant QR codes. Depending on the extent and combination of design choices, the resulting QR code may not be scannable on some devices. The act of customizing a QR code introduces "damage" into the standard ISO compliant QR code format. As such,  customized QR codes require a high level of error correction to remain scannable. Error correction is a capability of QR codes to restore data if the code is dirty or damaged. This ensures high scannability despite the "damage" from customization.

Digital QR codes

For digital applications, the following specification assumes a 1080p display.

  • Minimum digital QR code size
    • 240 pixels at 72 dpi

Since many digital QR codes are incorporated into signage, keep in mind that the minimum code size will need to increase depending on the distance between the code and the person scanning. The signage section below, which includes digital and print, addresses the calculation for this distance.

QR codes on digital and print out-of-home (OOH) signage

QR code size guidelines on digital and print out-of-home (OOH) signage

Because those scanning may not be directly next to the sign, you’ll need to increase the QR code size depending on how far away they will be.

  • Ratio of scanning distance to QR code size
    • 10:1
  • Formula for calculating QR code size based on scanning distance
    • QR code minimum size = Scanning distance (in cm or inches) ÷ 10

For example, if a code on a billboard will be scanned at a distance of 10 meters, the code should be at least 1 meter x 1 meter in size.

Code design for out-of-home (OOH) may require deeper bespoke analysis. This starts with an understanding of the printing specifications or digital display, Frame size (6-sheet , 28-sheet, 96-sheet, and higher), LCD resolution (2K, 4K), Nits, and if an LED screen, factors such as pixel pitch.  Always Test.

Dynamic vs. static codes. A dynamic QR code provides the ability to change the destination address to which the QR code redirects to. With dynamic QR codes, reprinting of the code is not necessary after changing the address. Unlike dynamic QR codes, static QR codes point to a fixed address. A static QR code does not allow changing the destination that the QR code resolves to when scanned.

Dynamic QR Code

A Dynamic QR code has a modifiable destination URL.

A Short URL is placed into the QR code which then transparently re-directs the user to the intended destination. Dynamic QR codeThe destination of a dynamic QR code can be changed at any time and as often as you want – even if your marketing material has already been printed. This will save reprinting costs, effort and enable you to respond to any changes in the campaign as quickly as possible.

Static QR Code

A Static QR code has a fixed destination URL.

The information encoded in static QR codes are fixed. The destination/data is stored directly in the QR Code graphic (hence QR codes are also getting larger and form a more complex pattern if there is more data to store). Therefore, the stored destination/data cannot be changed. Any typo in an already printed QR code cannot be changed, as with any other printed material.

For QR codes that will be scanned from a distance, the ratio of the scanning distance to the size of the QR code should be close to 10:1

QR codes are encountered in different circumstances, fitting into one of the following distances.

Sizes listed always refer to an exact square shape because otherwise, your QR code will not function properly.

Intimate distance

Effectively zero distance. These QR codes are expected to be interacted with from a small distance; it can be as small as the camera focus on your device can go.

Examples of QR codes at intimate distances:

  • QR codes inside a magazine or newspaper
  • QR codes on envelopes mailed to you
  • QR codes on business cards
  • QR codes on the menu in a restaurant
  • QR codes on products in a supermarket
  • QR codes on books and DVD covers

Minimum size for QR codes at intimate distances

  • 10 mm (.4 inch), excluding the margin

Recommend size for QR codes at intimate distances

  • 12 mm (.5 inch), excluding the margin

Personal distance

This is the distance individuals maintain between each other. The length of the arm plays a major role in defining this distance and it ranges between .5 to 1 meter (1.5-3 feet). QR codes that fit into the personal distance are QR codes that are in your arm distance after extending your arm towards them.

Examples of QR codes at personal distances:

  • QR codes on supermarket shelves
  • QR codes on bus stations
  • QR codes in a zoo or museum

Minimum size for QR codes at personal distances

  • 5 cm (2 inches), excluding the margin, is the minimum size for scanning at a distance of .5 to 1 meter (1.5-3 feet).

Social distance

This is the distance that people feel comfortable with, in a social situation. It measures between 1-3 meters (3-10 feet). QR codes that are expected to be interacted within a social distance are QR codes positioned in places where many people are gathered.

Examples of QR codes at social distances:

  • QR codes in subway cars
  • QR codes in buses
  • QR codes in underground stations
  • QR codes in bars and restaurants
  • QR codes in movie theaters
  • QR codes on posters and LED screens
  • QR codes on in-store POS / POP displays
  • QR codes on storefront windows

Minimum size for QR codes at social distances

  • 10 cm (3.5 inches), excluding the margin, is the minimum size for scanning at a distance of 1  meters (3 feet).
  • 30 cm (12 inches), excluding the margin, is the minimum size for scanning at a distance of 3 meters (10 feet).

Public distance

This is the distance considered to be well outside any social involvement. It measures more than 3 meters (10 feet and above). QR codes are expected to be interacted in a public zone.

Examples of QR codes at public distances:

  • QR codes on billboards
  • QR codes on signage
  • QR codes on T-shirts
  • QR codes on sign posts
  • QR codes on buildings and entrances
  • QR codes on buses

Minimum size for QR codes at public distances

  • 30 cm (12 inches), excluding the margin, is the minimum size for scanning at a distance of more than 3 meters (10 feet and above). See formula below for QR codes at a distance.

QR codes at a distance

Because those scanning may not be directly next to the code, you’ll need to increase the QR code size depending on how far away they will be. For example, if a code on a billboard will be scanned at a distance of 10 meters, the code should be at least 1 meter wide.

  • Ratio of scanning distance to QR code size
    • 10:1
  • Formula for calculating QR code size based on scanning distance
    • QR code minimum size = Scanning distance (in cm or inches) ÷ 10

QR Code FAQs

Size
The size of your code is of the upmost importance and differs between standard and customized QR codes. | Learn more about size guidelines here.

Contrast

Good contrast between the background color of the QR code and the dot pattern color of the QR code is very important when a standard Black & White code is not used. In cases of colorized codes, the QR code should have a dark color with a light background color. Also note that some QR code readers cannot read reversed colors e.g., light color with a dark background color, white with black background color. Good contrast also ensures your QR code is able to be seen by people with visual impairments.

Quality and format

Avoid pixelated or blurry QR codes and make sure to print them sharp and clear. Not only do they scan better, but they also look more professional. Depending on the size of your QR code, raster JPG and PNG formats work well for small-scale printing such as business cards and brochures. That said, graphic designers and print shops prefer vector files like EPS and SVG. The advantage of the EPS and SVG formats is that they can be scaled easily to any size — without compromising on quality. This means there won’t be any pixelation or stretching of modules. You can repurpose the same QR code on different materials like billboards, flyers, TV commercials, etc. in different sizes. |  Learn more about the difference between raster and vector formats here.

Number of QR codes

Printing multiple QR codes close to each other or even placing QR Codes next to barcodes can lead to accidentally scanning the wrong one. When possible, use only one QR code per application. This creates focus on the action you want consumers to take. It also prevents phone cameras from jumping focus from code to code.

However, there will be times when you need to put more than one QR code on an application. If you must, place QR codes on opposite ends of your layout and/or increase the empty space around each QR code to ensure the consumer can focus their camera on just a single code. Usually, this should only be done when the user is at arm's length of the QR code to allow them the flexibility to move the camera to focus on a single code. This does not work well on large signage at a distance (a billboard, for example).

Margins and quiet zone

Margins

Regardless of application, the margins around a QR code should be equivalent to at least four data modules (the Delivr default). QR code modules are the dots that make up QR code. Keep in mind that the number of modules can differ among QR codes that have the same overall dimensions.

Quiet zone

The quiet zone is the space surrounding the QR code that separates the QR code from other designs. QR codes need a quiet zone so that scanners can detect what images are QR code pixels and which aren’t. Without the quiet zone, it’s likely that the QR code will not work.

Call-to-action (CTA)

A QR code on its own is not a call-to-action. A simple directive such as "Open Camera & Scan Code" near the code can incentivize consumers to reach for their phones. It is recommended that you clearly inform the consumer what content they will receive if they scan your code.

Placement and timing

Keep QR codes within reach

Placing your QR code too high up, too low on the ground, or too far away means your customers will have a hard time reaching to scan the code. Place QR codes within appropriate reach for maximum accessibility. Would you crouch down or use a ladder just to scan a QR code? Placing QR codes at eye-level is recommended. Designers will want to avoid placing QR codes at the top third of their creative if the screens are installed with the midline above eye-level.

Show the QR code for as long as possible

Consider the time it takes for a person to walk on a sidewalk or public hallway, see content on digital signage, notice the QR code, decide they want to scan it, and successfully scan it. Many out of home ads appear for 10 seconds or less, so even if the creative is dynamic, designers should present the QR code for the full length of the slot to maximize the opportunity for successful conversion.

Printing surfaces

Creativity can go a long way whether printing on paper, glass, aluminum or plastic. That said, be wary of choosing material that reflects too much light or distorts the image and competes with the scannability of your QR code. Uneven surfaces that are ribbed may disfigure the code and printing in between magazine folds may section off parts of the code so it’s harder to view and scan the full QR code image. Use your best judgement and make sure to test your QR code to confirm it’s scannable.

Check your content

Imagine your customers’ dismay when they take the time to scan your QR code just to find a broken link or outdated information. This is a mishap we’ve frequently seen that can be easily avoided. To keep from being stuck with a QR code that you can’t ever update, make sure to create a Dynamic QR Code. With this type of code, you can change the destination URL or content any time even after you’ve already printed and distributed your marketing material.

Always test your QR code

Verify your QR code will scan at the size it will be printed or displayed before using it.

Apple leads other devices. With the release of iOS 14.4, Apple devices became able to read smaller QR codes as well as codes wrapped around objects when the native camera app is used for scanning. Apple doesn’t specify the minimum size that can be read, but it shows a continued trend toward improved native compatibility.

The main difference between vector and raster graphics is that vector graphics are composed of paths, while raster graphics are composed of pixels. Vector graphics can be resized without loss of quality, which is ideal for printing. Vectors come in 4 file formats — .AI, .EPS (print use), .SVG (digital use) and .PDF. Raster graphics lose quality when resized. Examples of Raster formats include .GIF,.JPG,.PNG and .TIFF. For best results printing standard QR codes we recommend .EPS format. That said, if the QR code design is customized or includes tranparency, .SVG format should be used.

Vector images are mathematical calculations from one point to another that form lines and shapes. When you enlarge a vector graphic, the math formulas stay the same, rendering the same visual graphic no matter the size. Vector graphics can be scaled to any size without losing quality.

Raster images are made of pixels. A pixel is a single point or the smallest single element in a display device. If you zoom in to a raster image you may start to see a lot of little tiny squares. A raster image has a specific number of pixels. When you enlarge the image file without changing the number of pixels, the image will look blurry. When you enlarge the file by adding more pixels, the pixels are added randomly throughout the image, rarely producing good results.

SQRC (Secret-function-equipped QR code) is the worlds only ISO/IEC18004 compliant 2D barcode that can securely trigger a public and private action. SQRC codes while looking no different than a standard QR code, can contain public data and encrypted private data, providing a foundation for secure authentication and authorization to access confidential information. SQRC keeps the error correction capability of codes intact and undisturbed, ensuring greater readability when a code is damaged or obstructed. DENSO, part of the Toyota Group, is the inventor of the QR Code® and SQRC®.  SQRC® is a registered trademark of DENSO WAVE INC.

SQRC conceals and protects private information.

SQRC Conceals Private Information

  • Can be scanned and ‘read’ by an ordinary QR code reader/scanner  - but only public information is readable
  • The fact that private information exists is not obvious; cannot be detected by a QR code reader/scanner

SQRC Protects Private Information

  • SQRC® Encoding: Can only be read by an authorized SQRC® capable scanner, making it possible to encode and manage confidential information.
  • Secret Key Encryption: Can only be read by scanners that have the secret key used for encryption

SQRC are readable when other codes might not be.

  • Error correction allows reading of a code even if it is dirty or damaged. With SQRC®, full error correction stays intact.
  • Some of the other ‘secure’ code methods involve using the error correction area to conceal ‘secret’ information; this means the error correction area is intentionally corrupted, which is an equivalent to a damaged code. If such code is then further obstructed in some way, whether by dirt, damage, or some other obstruction, the code might not be readable. SQRC®, on the other hand, retains the full error correction capability; thus, an SQRC® of the same size as a QR code® using such alternative method will provide higher readability when obstructed.
  • Further, in such other solutions, the private data may not have the same error correction rate as the PUBLIC data, or not have the error correction capability at all.

SQRC visual encoding is virtually impossible to crack.

The QR code® specification is a public standard; this means there is a publicly known algorithm that produces a set of error correction information for each given set of data. When such error correction information is intentionally damaged by introducing a ‘noise’, it is always possible to determine the difference, that is to exactly find out what the introduced ‘noise’ is. Given time, today’s computer processing power, code breaking algorithms and sufficient number of samples, such noise can be analyzed, determining if it actually carries ‘secret’ information. Such analysis can eventually lead to breaking of the encryption used and thus reading, replication or counterfeiting of such ‘secret’ information. SQRC® technology, on the other hand, leaves the error correction intact; it is thus not possible to determine the difference based on the publicly known standard. It is actually not possible to determine with certainty that the QR code® is actually an SQRC®.

SQRC are more secure, using secure key encryption.

SQRC® secret information is further protected by a Secret Key encryption, where only the SQRC-capable scanners or App SDKs that also possess various levels of decoding authorization to access the Secret Key used for a particular SQRC® encryption can actually read and decrypt the private information contained in that particular SQRC®. Unauthorized applications can not read or detect the fact that private information is included, preventing data analysis and application of encryption breaking techniques to break the code and read the information.

Yes. The QR code specification was published by the developer DENSO Wave as an ISO standard (ISO/IEC 18004:2000 bzw. ISO/IEC 18004:2006).

Dynamic vs. static codes.

Delivr's Visual QR Code Designer enables you to effortlessly merge a QR Code with any part of an image to create a beautiful and clear call-to-action. Visual QR by Delivr® combines the visual design that people LOVE with the QR code call-to-action that people KNOW, creating an experience that draws peoples attention and invites them to make the leap from print to mobile.

You can upload an image, turn any part of it into a QR code and then download the newly created Visual QR, all without comprising its original transparency, dimensions, format and resolution. Delivr’s technology supports the uploading of PNG, GIF and JPG images in RGB color mode. PNG 24 format is recommended for uploading source images with transparency. Please note that the area where you place your QR code cannot be transparent. If you require a Visual QR graphic for placement on a CMYK or high-resolution image, upload a RGB image for position only (FPO).

Visual QR graphics will be provided in the following formats:

  • 300 DPI Transparent PNG-24
  • Scalable Vector Graphic (SVG + Transparent) for placement on high-resolution artwork intended for print
  • PNG format with QR code placed ON your original image for digital reproduction or FPO purposes

Using the Delivr QR Code Generator, it is possible to create many types of QR codes.

Create QR codes with our QR Code Generator for URLs, Bitcoin, Tweets, Dropbox, Instagram, Pinterest, App Store Downloads, Google Play Downloads, Google Analytics Campaigns, Profile/vcards, mobile-friendly landing pages. and more.

A QR Code Generator is software that creates QR Codes. A QR code is a 2D barcode that can store alphanumeric information such as a URL that links a webpage, chunks of text, phone numbers, email addresses, contact information, calendar events, and location coordinates. Advanced QR Code Generators allow the additional ability to design, manage and track QR codes.

A QR Code Generator stores data such as a short URL or web addresses into a QR code. This can be easily done with the QR Generator by Delivr.  With Delivr you can create a QR code by simply typing in your URL and downloading the QR code graphic in print-ready Vector (EPS, SVG) formats, or Bitmap/Raster (PNG, JPG) formats.

Advanced QR Code Generators such as Delivr go one step further and make it possible to create dynamic QR codes, customize the design of your QR code, and track scanning activity.

A "quiet zone" is placed around the QR code image when it's generated to separates the QR code from anything else in its surroundings. The quiet zone is used to buffer the code from its surroundings to prevent any adjacent images or text from being interpreted as part of the code image itself and interfering with the scanning of the code.

The size of the buffer zone is mathematically determined when the code is created to ensures an error free code. This buffer zone must be retained. It's simply a white space border and when you generate the code you will see that it's part of the actual code image.

The quiet zone is recommended to be a minimum of 4 times the width of a single data square in the code image, however depending on the surroundings of the code (ie; against an unpatterned dark background) you may be able to reduce that to 2 times pixel width.

If you reduce the size of the quiet zone, the finished QR code should be tested thoroughly in its intended final setting to make sure that it still scans correctly.

Yes. In a QR code the dark bits are always interpreted as data so the dots always need to be a darker color than the background. The reliability of the QR code is also determined by the contrast difference between the dots and the background, so pale grey dots on a white background will be difficult for some scanning devices to read and the code may not function properly.

Short version: Choose whatever colors you want but always make sure the dots are a significantly darker colour than the background - we suggest at least 70% darker to ensure reliable scanning.

...and always test your QR code to make sure it works using the colors you've chosen.

We recommend no smaller than 2cm (0.8") however the minimum size of the QR code will be dependent on:

  • The distance between the QR code and the scanning device, and hence the size the code will appear to be in the viewport of the scanning device - if you have one on the side of a building it would need to be very large because it's going to be scanned from a long distance, however if it's printed in a magazine then the scanning device will be held quite close to it.
  • The size of the dots in the code - As the data you put into a QR code increases, the number of dots that the QR codes needs to use to store that data increases accordingly. For a QR code of a given size this will result in progressively smaller dots being used and eventually they will reach a size that's below the resolution limit of the scanning device. As a general rule of thumb we recommend that your QR code should have no more than 50 rows and columns of dots to stay within the usual maximum resolution limits of most smartphone cameras.

Regardless of the size of the QR code, the finished QR code should be tested thoroughly in its intended final setting to make sure that it works at that size.

While the QR codes themselves conform to an ISO standard, not all app developers are as diligent with standards compliance as they should be. In our experience about 80% of issues relating to scan errors are because the scanning app being used is sub-standard, or is challenged by QR codes containing anything more complex than a website URL.

QR codes (quick response codes) are 2D Barcodes readable by smartphones using a QR code reader App. QR codes placed in ads, direct mail, retail displays or signage can deliver information and media to a consumer's smartphone via their mobile Web browser. QR codes can launch URLs, mobile landing pages, initiate phone calls, Tweets, App Store Downloads, Google Play Downloads and more.

Since 2008, Delivr’s Campaign Management & Tracking Platform has been successfully deployed by thousands of brands and businesses to run campaigns that connect print, social and broadcast media to mobile content, experiences and offers. Delivr extends your reach and understanding across online, offline and social channels by providing self-service tools that enable you to create and manage campaigns, then track and measure audience engagement of ads, direct mail, packaging, product tags, retail displays, and signage using Short URLs, QR codes®, and NFC tags.

QR codes are a bridge a bridge between offline and online brand experiences, content, and offers. Delivr's QR code generator is the best way to create, manage, and track QR codes. With our Dynamic QR codes, you have full flexibility, because only a short URL that points to the content is encoded. As such, you can modify the stored links without having to generate and print the QR codes again. This will save reprinting costs, effort and enable you to respond to any changes in the campaign as quickly as possible. Export QR codes in both raster (PNG, JPG) and vector (EPS, SVG, formats. Select the best option for printing QR codes in any size, color and on any medium, with no compromises on quality. You can even generate a custom QR code design by effortlessly merging a QR code with any part of an image to create a beautiful and clear call-to-action.

ISO 18004-compliant. Edit destination anytime. Export in vector format for high-quality print. Track scans.

Delivr does NOT insert ads.

Some QR code readers pull your destination page into their App and wrap ads around it there.

This action by these QR code readers causes confusion for consumers.

Delivr recommends promoting and using QR code readers that DO NOT insert ads.

Yes. A typical case is when QR codes are published in different media and you want to track the scans from each separately, as well the scans of all in aggregate.

The following example illustrates how to do this:

  • QR code 2 also has a destination URL of https://example.com and is published in a direct mail sent to your clients.
  • QR code 3 also has a destination URL of https://example.com and is published in a poster in a physical location, such as a store.

Individual reports for each QR code would represent reports for scans from magazines, direct mail and posters.

If all three QR codes are placed in a Group, the report on the Group level would show aggregate results for all three codes.

Please also see "What is a Campaign Group?"

Some web sites redirect mobile visits differently then desktop visitors. Enter the Destination URL directly in your smartphone's web browser and see where you are directed to.  If you are redirected to a page other then the page you are expecting then the mobile site more then likely employs logic that is redirecting mobile visitors in this way. This is not an issue with Delivr and can only be resolved with changes to the code/logic at the mobile site.

Delivr supports QR codes as specified in ISO/IEC 18004:2006 Information technology – Automatic identification and data capture techniques – QR code 2005 bar code symbology specification.

You can modify QR code error correction, margin, size and color.

You can download QR codes in both raster (PNG, JPG) and vector (EPS, SVG) formats. Select the best option for printing QR codes in any size, color and on any medium, with no compromises on quality. You can even generate a custom QR code design by effortlessly merging a QR code with any part of an image to create a beautiful and clear call-to-action.

Delivr FREE campaigns and QR codes remain active for 1 year from creation date -or- after 1000 views, whichever comes first, after which they expire. To extend the life or reactivate expired campaigns, simply upgrade to a paid subscription plan.

Delivr PLUS, Delivr PRIME, Delivr VIP, Delivr PRO and Delivr ENTERPRISE campaigns do NOT expire under an active paid subscription plan.

Please see the Delivr plans and pricing page for additional details

The number of active campaigns and QR codes you can create depends on your subscription plan. An active campaign is typically a campaign visible through your account dashboard. A paused campaign is still considered active. A campaign must be archived to became inactive, in which case it will not count towards your plan's limit. However, it gets restored and thus re-activated, it will count towards the limit.

Please see the Delivr plans and pricing page for more details.

QR code stands for "Quick Response" code. A QR code is a 2D barcode that can store alphanumeric information such as a URL. This information can be decoded and read using a QR code scanner or a QR code reader app on a smartphone. The QR code was invented by DENSO Wave, a Toyota subsidiary in 1994.

The acronym QR is short for “Quick Response”. QR Codes are also often called 2D barcodes. However, this notation is not correct, because it means “a two-dimensional code consisting of bars” although a QR code consists of pixels (so-called “modules”) instead of bars.

A QR code is a two-dimensional code (2D code, matrix code), this means it contains data not only in one dimension e.g., horizontally from left to right like the barcodes on the products in your grocery store but also in a second dimension (vertical and horizontal). As a QR Code can carry information in both the vertical and horizontal direction, it can store up to several hundred times the amount of data carried by a bar code. Over 7,000 numeric characters can be encoded in one QR Code.

The Quick Response (QR) code was developed at DENSO Corporation’s Industrial Systems Product Division (currently separated in 2001 to become DENSO WAVE Incorporated) in 1994. The code was originally developed to manage automotive component inventories in DENSO plants. Traditional bar codes were conventionally used, but as the need increased to include more information in a limited space, DENSO set up a team in 1992 to develop a new code, and in two years the QR code was developed.

Like other codes, the QR code symbol can be captured with imaging devices like a camera and then digitally processed. Software prepares the captured image data until it can be algorithmically processed according to the QR code standard so the QR code content can be read. The QR code has position detection patterns located at the three corners of the code, which enable reader equipment to quickly and accurately read the code from any direction. Since the QR code was originally developed for factory use, one of the development focuses was to create a code that could withstand stains and damage. Through this development, the code’s data can be restored even if a maximum of 30 percent of the code is damaged.

Because of the excellent error correction QR codes provide and the high memory capacity (in comparison with other bar codes), the QR code also gained traction outside the automotive industry. Modern mobile phones are powerful enough to run QR code reading software and also usually provide a camera. This combination brought up a variety of possibilities to use the QR code to easily transfer data without needing to type a URL into a mobile web browser. Therefore, a widespread use of QR codes became possible with the recent smartphone boom and the increasing spread of mobile internet.

The patent rights for the code are owned by DENSO WAVE, but the specifications and use of the code were made open and free to the public to widely expand its use in the market. The code was also approved as an ISO international standard in 2000. In Japan, where the QR code holds commanding share for two dimensional codes, it has been widely used in production and distribution management. And, since QR code reader functions were installed to cellular phones in early 2000, their usage has vastly expanded to the consumer market in areas including, advertising and marketing, business cards, ticket passes, coupons and more.

History of the QR Code. | More about QR codes can be found on Wikipedia.

Where you generate your QR codes is as important as your reason for generating them.

Delivr is one of a handful of companies worldwide licensed by DENSO.  DENSO, part of the Toyota Group, is a world leader in automatic data capture technology and the inventor of the QR Code®.  DENSO’s QR code technology is the undisputed standard in driving analog to digital engagement. Another DENSO technology, SQRC® is the worlds only ISO/IEC18004 compliant 2D barcode that can securely trigger a public and private action. Through this relationship, Delivr offers a compelling new generation of services that transform the use of the conventional QR code and takes QR codes to a higher level of intelligence, security, and customer experience.  All the resulting solutions are either patented by DENSO or proprietary to Delivr and are superior to competing products. No other self-service QR Code Generator can make these same claims, it is our unique distinction.

There are three conditions in the world of QR codes you simply can not control. You can't control which device is reading your QR code, the operating system on that device, or which QR code reader app is being used. As a DENSO partner,  Delivr upholds rarefied standards when generating ISO compliant QR codes with our QR Code Generator. Take  control over the only condition in the world of QR codes you can control - the QR code itself  by using QR codes from Delivr.

QR codes are matrix type codes developed to accomplish three primary goals:

  1. fast, muti-directional scanning
  2. achieve high capacity storage within a small area
  3. portable information at your fingertips

How do QR codes work?

QR codes can be read by the camera in most mobile phones. Once they are scanned, software deciphers the encrypted information and initiates a response. This response can involve either directing the phone to a website, providing the user with iintegrated data stored within the code or documenting an event. In any case, it eliminates the need to search for content and provides direct access to information.

What are QR codes used for?

  • Advertising
  • Competitions
  • Business cards
  • Social networking (Facebook , Twitter, etc.)
  • Branding
  • Ticketing/registration
  • Campaign tracking
  • File access
  • Statistics
  • Logistics/parts tracking
  • Marketing
  • Payment
  • Reminders/updates the possibilities are endless.

In a nutshell

  • QR codes can hold over 200 times the data of a regular bar code and have over 30 fold increase in recording density
  • 360 degree multidirectional, high speed reading - no need to align the reader to the code, simply point and scan
  • Dirt and damage resistant - data redundancy ensures that the code can be read if part of the code is missing or damaged
  • Warp resistance - code can be placed on a curved or warped surface
  • Encode different language format - supports other languages character sets such as Japanese, Chinese, etc.
  • High capacity space saving printing using less space, less ink and less intrusion for marketing space
  • Linking function - one QR code can be divided into 12 QR codes

What's next?

DENSO has recently released the Security QR code (SQRC®). Any QR code enabled device can read QR codes therefore SQRC were developed to meet the growing demands for the secure transportation of data with the product. Confidential information is code key encrypted and combined in the QR code. This means that the QR code can still be read by general readers, but the encrypted data is protected and only accessible using a special reading device with the same SQRC code key.

Not just for phones.

As the developers of QR code, DENSO data capture solutions format is best equipped to get the most out of your QR codes. They have faster, more accurate scanning rates and are known throughout the industry for their quality and durability. Ask DENSO which solution is best for your application.

The 3 Steps of our QR Code Tracking Process Explained.

  1. Provision & Distribute

    • Create a campaign at Delivr.
    • Download the QR code associated with the campaign.
    • Include the QR code on your choice of media. QR codes can be distributed via ad, sticker, packaging, poster, publication, billboard, or wherever else you would include a URL.
  2. Track & Deliver
    • Consumer sees and scans the QR code using any smartphone with a QR code Reader App.
    • Visit data is sent to Delivr's tracking server.
    • The consumer experiences the immediate launch of your campaign landing page in their smartphone's mobile Web browser.
  3. Process & Report
    • Delivr processes, stores, and reports the results of your QR code campaign in real time.

Yes, if your QR code was created at Delivr.

Delivr's QR Code Generator provides dynamic QR Codes.

The destination of a dynamic QR Code can be changed at any time and as often as you wish – even if your materials are already printed. Advertising campaigns can be updated at any time and mistakes corrected in the case the wrong link was used when you generated your QR Code.

What makes the QR Code I generate at Delivr, "dynamic"?

Delivr's QR Code Generator encodes a managed Short URL into your QR code that 301 redirects to your destination URL. As such, you can modify the stored link without having to generate and print a new QR Code. This will save reprinting costs, effort, and enable you to respond to any changes to marketing campaigns as quickly as possible.

How do I edit the Destination URL of my QR code?

From your Dashboard, find the campaign that you wish to edit and click, the "Edit" / pencil icon.  Type in a new Destination URL and click, "Save".  Future scans will send your audience to the new Destination URL.
