GS1 Digital Link QR Code Packaging Design Checklist (Sunrise 2027)

GS1 Digital Link QR Code Packaging Design Checklist (Sunrise 2027)

Key Design Checklist

QR Size

  • Minimum typically 15–20 mm. (varies by substrate and data payload)
  • No fixed maximum size. (optimize for scan reliability and packaging space)

Quiet Zone

  • Minimum 4 modules on all sides.
  • Must remain intact after print distortion and application.

Contrast

  • Use high-contrast dark-on-light QR codes (preferably black on white). Avoid gradients, metallic inks, low-contrast brand backgrounds, or any treatment that reduces module clarity or scanner reliability.

GS1 QR Code Integrity

  • GS1 Digital Link QR Codes must maintain standardQR Code structure without alteration of module geometry or pattern design. Decorative or customized dot patterns are not permitted.

Human-Readable GTIN

  • During the Sunrise 2027 transition, GTIN typically appears once under the UPC/EAN.
  • Avoid duplication under the GS1 QR code unless specifically required.
  • In a QR-only future state, GTIN must appear near the QR code.

lacement

  • Avoid seams, folds, corners, and high-curvature zones.
  • Avoid reflective coatings and distortion areas.
  • Ensure stable scan surface on final pack geometry.

Checkout Performance Requirement

  • The center of the GS1 Digital Link QR Code should be within 50 mm of the center of the linear barcode.
  • Applies to dual-marked packaging for POS scan efficiency.

Digital Link Validation

  • Must conform to GS1 Digital Link URI structure.
  • Must resolve correctly to intended destination content.

Testing

  • Validate on iPhone and Android devices.
  • Test on POS laser and image-based scanners.
  • Test at retail scanning distance and lighting conditions.
  • Verify performance after printing and packaging conversion.

Print Quality

  • Must remain scannable after production variability and lifecycle wear.
  • Target ISO/IEC QR print quality Grade B or better where applicable.
