How report time zones affect visit dates and times.

Visit timestamps are stored using a consistent GMT/UTC server time and then converted for display using the time zone selected for the report. As a result, the report time zone determines both the displayed time of a visit and the calendar day on which that visit appears.
 
Because the report time zone may differ from the visitor’s local time zone, a visit can appear on a different calendar day from when it occurred locally. This is expected behavior and ensures that all visits within a report are grouped consistently according to a single reporting time zone.

Visit times are recorded using a consistent GMT/UTC server timestamp and then converted for reporting based on the selected report time zone:

Visit → Server Timestamp (GMT/UTC) → Apply Report Time Zone → Display Localized Visit Time

The report time zone determines how all visit timestamps are displayed and which calendar day they fall within. It does not necessarily represent the visitor’s local time zone.

For example, China uses GMT+8, while Islamabad uses GMT+5 If a visit occurs in China at 2:00 AM on September 3, its GMT/UTC timestamp is 6:00 PM on September 2. If the report is set to Islamabad (GMT+5), that same visit is displayed as 11:00 PM on September 2.

Therefore, although the visit occurred locally in China on September 3, it appears in the Islamabad-based report on September 2. This is expected because the report groups and displays visits according to the report time zone, rather than the visitor’s local time zone.

If the report time zone is instead set to GMT+8, the same stored GMT/UTC timestamp of 6:00 PM on September 2 is converted to 2:00 AM on September 3. The visit will therefore appear in the report on September 3, matching the local date and time of the visit in China.

This is the same general reporting approach used by Google Analytics. Google Analytics uses the configured reporting time zone to determine the date and day boundary for reports, regardless of where the visitor or event originates. As a result, an event may appear on a different calendar day from the visitor's local date when the reporting time zone differs from the visitor's local time zone.
